Poem: Expect Nothing (Alice Walker)

Alice Walker
b. 1944

"Expect Nothing"

Expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.
Become a stranger
To need of pity
Or, if compassion be freely
Given out
Take only enough.
Stop short of urge to plead
Then purge away the need.

Wish for nothing larger
Than your own small heart
Or greater than a star;
Tame wild disappointment
With caress unmoved and cold.
Make of it a parka
For your soul.

Discover the reason why
So tiny human midget
Exists at all
So scared unwise.
But expect nothing. Live frugally
On surprise.

One of my favourite poems that reminds me to not expect anything. When you live life more freely you will not be disappointed when things do not go your way. Learn to approach life with less expectations and more from your heart. Listen to your gut and instincts.

This situation we are all in made me revisit this poem, an all time favourite from one of the greatest poets Alice Walker.
