Mental Health During Quarantine

Social distancing during this pandemic has been very difficult to adjust to; many of the things we took for granted are now out of our hands. While it can be hard to stay home, it is important for us to listen to our leaders and stay home, as it can very well can save lives. So what can you do when you are stuck at home and have nothing to do? For me, I have decided to start blogging, which is something that I always wanted to do and never had time. It is very important to stay busy and have a routine during quarantine. You must try your best to create a routine and stick to it, as it can help your mental health.

I have tried my best to stick to a routine and maintain good sleep hygiene; it can be very easy to fall into a trap where you sleep in or stay up all night. So try your best to avoid taking naps; good sleep hygiene can help in decreasing depressive thoughts and anxiety. Here are some helpful tips and suggestions on things you can do during quarantine:

 1.     Read books- I have been reading more books now that I have more free time (I will post a reading list shortly)

2.     Go for walks- If possible try to get some fresh air. I know it’s not possible for everyone depending on your age and health risks. Of course if you have health risks and are a senior citizen its best you stay at home. If you can go for a walk, then try your best to keep distance from others. Walking is an excellent source of exercise.

3.     Maintain a routine- So that could be just setting the alarm to wake up the same time in the morning and sleeping at the same time at night. Also create a schedule on tasks you want to get done (if you work from home, and or taking courses).

4.     Online Mental Health Support- During these times it is important to take care of your mental health. The instability and uncertainty can be really stress inducing. There are mental health professionals available online. Most provide support over the phone; if you suffering from anxiety or depression, please seek professional help.

5.     Schedule your lunch break, and snack breaks. At work you have your usual time for lunch and breaks, so try to create a similar routine at home.

6.     Entertainment- social media, Netflix, streaming television shows, movies, music etc. Of course you need to make time to relax and enjoy yourself. My sisters and I have been watching movies in the living room together. This is something you can look forward to. If you live alone, you can connect online with your friends and family.

While social distancing is challenging, it is important for us to do our part and stay home to help those who are vulnerable. This virus has been very challenging for marginalized vulnerable communities, front line workers, and lower socio-economic household.

Here are some organizations that are providing support for those affected by Covid (some are local while others focus on Low-GDP Countries):

You can find more organizations online simply through searching Covid relief or donations.

 Stay Strong!
