Giving Somali Girls A Chance

There are many stories of young Somali girls being taken from their home at such a young age to get married. These horrific stories all share a common problem in Somalia: lack of women rights. Young girls are often forced or coerced to marry at very young ages, some as young as 9 years old. They suffer from complications from young birth which at times results in early death for their babies. It can create a lot of complications for Somali women, often resulting in a hard and difficult life.

Somali women like all women deserve a chance for education and a chance for a good quality life. It is unfortunate that we have neglected these issues, often choosing to ignore their plight. There needs to be advocacy around these issues. This falsehood of blaming religion for the outright violence against women is a disturbing; Islam does not allow for the denigration for human rights. Anyone who uses this argument is promoting false ideas in order to serve their own agenda.

There are some helpful non-profit organization located in Somalia that are doing their part to stop Child marriage. Elman Peace is a non-profit organization that has a long history of serving Somali people. Ilwad Elman (Director) has spoken out against this bill. She along with her family continue to fight for women rights and justice in Somalia. You can find out more about their work on their website below:
